Friday, Feb. 4th, a group of Catalina High, class of 59 Coeds and 'Divas' were having their monthly meeting at the 'Arizona Inn' in Tucson......Although on high security alert, a mysterious stranger 'CRASHED' the meeting........The 'CRASHER' however was immediatly shown the door.
Those in attendance were.....Jeanne Webb, Thelma Taylor, Margie Tench, Judy Randall, Lee Ann Ferguson and Pam Morris..........Word on the street has it that the monthly meeting will still be held at the Arizona Inn.........But please don't tell anyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Its great to see the Ladies of Catalina 59 getting together!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LUTE OLSON CREDITS APPEARANCE OF 'STUDS OF CATALINA 59 GANG' FOR VICTORY OVER CALIFORNIA!!!!!!!!!!!!
Five really cool studs from 'Catalina High Class of '59 were spotted at the Feb. 3rd U of A vs California basketball game........From the moment they walked in the Wildcats game improved to a new level of excellence, and concluded in a victory for the home team..........As Lute was praising their appearance at the game, a hush fell over the woman in attendance, as the group made their way to their 'Cool Dude' seats..........Those Cool Dudes were....Mike Nagle, Dave Giles, Pete Hand, & Nate Foster........also seated in the background Mr. Jim 'Sak' Sakrison .
Editor's Note: The hottest rock group at CHS was The Nightbeats with Pete Ronstadt, Bert Roberts, Nate Foster, Lance Hoopes, and Don Grossberndt. They even had a local hit, Lonesome Road Rock, that was heard on KTKT and other stations. What happened to the group? Member Nate Foster fills us in:
Remembering...
The Nightbeats
After Catalina, the Nightbeats, while all attending the U of A, we decided to get back together (3 of us anyway) and become 'The Garbage Men'.
Consisting of Bert Roberts, Don Grossberndt, Nate Foster and a newcomer Bob Sorey.
It was a music and comedy group which played in every dive in Tucson. Remember the 'Doll House', 'La Jolla Club' on S. 4th, Smileys, Poco Loco and many more......The band got an agent and traveled though out California, from Yuma up the coast to San Francisco. Played with groups like Stan Getz, Checkmates, Bobby Vinton an others...........After a couple of years the Garbage Men went their own ways.
BEACH BOYS, BOATS, GAMBLING AND WATCHES...................
From Friday, when all met in the lobby of the Flamingo in Laughlin, thru Sunday all attending the Beach Boys concert had a Super time...17 fun & wild souls attended, including CHS59, friends from work and extended families.
All dressed in Aloha garb, complete with leis, inflatable beachballs and inflatable guitars, the group was ready for a great Concert...The 2 hr. concert was awesome.... The Beach Boys sang every song we all remembered, as the crowd sang and danced in the aisles......Mike Love, and Bruce Johnston, 2 of the originals (1965) were backed up by 8 truly talented younger guys.
The rest of the trip included all 17 going to the 'Comedy Store' at the Flamingo...Oldies night at the Ramada and shrimp cocktails at the 'Colorado Belle'.....and Buffet breakfasts.....Thanks to Ray 'Watch Man' Lindstrom all the wives or S/O's were given a free watch from his 'World Famous Watch Man Store' located in the Riverside Hotel.....This was a true highlight of the trip.
Sunday, many took boat trips or just sat by the water watching jet skiers. The nickel slots got a big work out from some, as well as the $2 blackjack tables......
We learned that the Beach Boys concert 2006 will be the same weekend next year (1 week after memorial day) All attending have plans to do this again next year.........MAKE PLANS TO JOIN US NEXT YEAR...............................We need Pam and 'the lunch bunch'.................plus many others next year.........Many thanks to Mike Nagle who helped make it a great weekend.....Surf-on.

Party at Dave Giles home
A few friends and Catalina 59'ers joined a reception at Dave Giles home in Tucson last week for Ford and Carolyn Burkhart . The group ate, drank and talked as we moved from the inside up to the deck area to see a fantastic sunset.
Thanks to Giles for the use of his beautiful home on the East side. Ford had some interesting stories about current events........as most know he is an assisting editor at the New York Times and gets first hand knowledge of lots of the DIRT!! Good to see Quentin and Kathy, Charlene and Hal, Pete Hand, Jeanne Webb, Pam Samuels, Jay and Barbara Kittle, Howard Frederick, Jack and Betty Allen, Jim and Marty Briscoe, Mike Nagle, Thelma T. ,Dave Giles , Nate and Heather Foster and of course Ford and Carolyn................
We had an oppurtunity to watch our Arizona Wildcats at the recent 'Maui Invitational Basketball Tourney' a couple of weeks ago....a great experience, as the Gym is about the size of Catalina's Basketball Gym..holds about 3,000 REALLY close friends. Great teams were there...Michigan State, Gonzoga, Arkansas, Kansas, Maryland, UConn. and U of A.
Heard that Dave Giles was there, staying at Paul Hazen's place.....
Below is a picture of Lute explaining the play to the team that Giles, Hazen and I had outlined for him.
Oops, Nate's had some medical problems lately...for the latest update, click here.
Who is this Catalina Dude acting like a 'Pizza Daddy'!!!!!! We tasted the results and it was great, but please M.N. don't give up the day job!!!!!

9th annual Super Bowl party at Mike Nagles' home in San Diego saw 3 classmates from Catalina High and about 35 others having a great time almost watching the Super Bowl, eating , drinking and gambling.........
Mike Nagle, Nate Foster and Ray Heidemann from '59' all lost money but enjoyed getting together for lots of memories............Ray was a great tennis champ!!
'OLD DOG, NEW TRICKS'
EEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKK.
Heather and I actually went Parasailing on a recent trip to Key West. I was convinced that man was not suppose to fly, but this was pretty cool. Great views of the Keys from 800 feet.
Yes, that really is Nate way up in the air.
And, Heather, too.
Now you know how Tee felt when she won all those skydiving awards!
GATHERING OF MOUNTAIN MEN
Five good friends from Class of 59 gathered from Tucson, Phoenix and San Diego for a couple of days (July13-15) in the White Mountains for a "Big Chill" weekend...ostensibly as a summit to solve all of the world's problems. The only matters that were resolved however were who were the best ping pong players, dart experts, who could stay up the latest and why Catalina High School never has had a good football team.
All of the participants contributed with colorful descriptions of their current ailments, recent surgeries, upcoming surgeries, medications, allergies... and of course, the weather. Mike Nagle even ended up in the local ER after a bout of vertigo and traveled back to San Diego via a wheelchair on Southwest airlines.
As it always is when good friends get together 48 years after their high school graduation some of the old stories become much funnier than they actually were at the time and like good wine, tend to improve with age. A great time was had by all.

CAN I PLEASE BE 'ROLLY FOSTER ' IN A FEW YEARS.!!!!!!!!
My Dad 'Rolly' and I spent a week in Seattle recently. He is about to turn 90 and we visited older sisters. '92 and 94'.............Rolly lives in Palm Springs in a RV Resort. He wears white pants, shoes and belt, topped off with various Hawaiian shirts....drives a Caddie and has several 'Casserole's delivered each week by the 75% female population. He is totally mobile and only gave up tennis a few months ago...........I can't keep up with this amazing man...I have enclosed a couple of pictures to show his older sisters and a 'bikini clad lifeguard 'who was enamored by his good looks and 'bachelor lines'..............
Please let me 'Be Like Rolly!!!!!!!!!!
On a recent trip to San Diego...
Heather and I took a long awaited tour of the Midway aircraft carrier. What a great and wonderful tour it was, on the flight deck, below decks and seeing where the officers and enlisted men had to sleep.....It was a great tribute to our armed forces. HOWEVER when visiting deep down in the bowls of the ship we spotted a familiar face behind the bars of the BRIG. We were not sure of the person until I heard a 'Nate get me outta here'!!! Click on animation below to see who was in the slammer...
Nate's Dad, now 92 and still rockin and rolling were in Seattle again last week to visit Rollys older sisters. ages 94 and 96. Had a great time visiting them and also hitting the hot spots in the Evergreen city.
Not only did Rolly have time to Flirt with all the young ladies, but we ate well at all the seafood places on the waterfront. When on a Ferry boat ride, The Duck ride and the space needle, plus Pike Market Place.
Rolly is still hard to keep up with as he walks fast and accurate. I, of course was stumbling and breathing heavy as we toured the city.......HOW GREAT IT IS TO HAVE A DAD YOU CAN TRAVEL WITH, I am truly blessed with this wonderful man.....
U of A Basketball weekend was a blast for all attending. Mike Nagle, Dave Giles, Pete Hand , Nate Foster, Heather Foster, Ray Heidemann and Mike's friend Robert, from San Diego. Heather was in seventh heaven being escorted by six guys to the game and La Paloma for dinner... All had a great time as Margaritas were 1/2 price, but Pete Hand's wine was full price ($10 for a glass). Pete normally gets the $2.49 a bottle from Wal-Mart.
We all had a great time at dinner and then both U of A games.....winning Stanford and California....
Lock up your women and daughters as some will be back for the Oregon Games 2/11 and 2/13.
Mountain Men 5th Annual Meeting.
The 5th Annual meeting of the ‘Mountain Men” was held over the weekend of 7/21 thru 7/24 in the White Mountains of Arizona. All of the group, Quentin Bryson (Mountain Man) Mike Nagle (Dizzy Man) Pete Hand (Hand Man) Pete Ronstadt (Chief Man) Dave Giles (Wheat Man) and Nate Foster (Dart Man) were there to celebrate the event.
Many contests were held to determine a true Mountain Men Champion…..
Go Cart Racing, Bowling, Ping Pong, Darts and Putting were among the events. When all the scores were tallied, Pete Hand, who had driven in from the Midwest, took the trophy. (A piece of stone from Old Main). Mike Nagle, who had flown in from San Diego, passed the stone on from his 2010 Championship. We have considered not renewing Pete’s membership.
The weekend included Talking, Talking and more Talking, with Burgers and Tubes on Friday, a Steak Fry on Sat. and a great brunch on Sunday with MANY snacks in between.
The Mountain Men solved most of the problems of the country, and have sent Washington DC a copy of notes that we expect will be acted upon.
All in all it was a great time of ‘bonding’ with great friends from Catalina High’s class 1959. All are still in decent health…… walking, talking and enjoy each others company. Although several of the wives say we are “hearing challenged”! We find that shouting is the best way to communicate.
